RRCC RIDE guide
and Safety GUIDE

for ride organisers and riders

1.The person organising the ride is responsible for making sure the ride runs smoothly.

 

2. A ride must be created in Facebook or Strava and posted at least one day before the ride.

 

3. A clear description of the ride must be included. This description must include start time, distance, average speed and elevation. Any coffee stops or special instructions must be indicated.

 

4. A map of the route must be shown and available for download.

5. There must be at least 1 ride Organiser and 1 ride helper for all group rides. Graphic needs updating below!

 

6. No group is to have more than 10 riders. Groups must be split if more than 10 riders.

 

7. Ride organisers and helpers must be known before the day of the ride.

 

8. A safety briefing by the ride organiser must be given to the group before the ride.

 

9. The ride organiser or helper must be at the front or back of the group at all times.

 

10. Any rider wishing to ride ahead of the group MUST ask the ride Organiser.

 

11. Riders must show respect for the ride leader and follow their instructions at all times.

 

12. The ride must start in a safe location away from busy roads and junctions.

 

13. Radio’s with ear pieces are available to borrow for ride organisers.

RRCC SAFETY GUIDE

 

  1. A Helmet must be worn.
     

  2. Front and rear lights should be used.
     

  3. Communicate with other riders pointing out hazards to riders behind. If you feel you can’t take your hands off the handlebars then shout loudly. 
     

  4. Don’t ride too closely to other riders. 
     

  5. Keep your hands close to the brakes. 
     

  6. If a car is approaching from behind shout “CAR BACK”. If a car is approaching from the front shout “CAR UP”. 
     

  7. Take a spare tube, levers and a pump/gas inflator on all rides. 
     

  8. Be courteous to all fellow cyclists, drivers and pedestrians.
     

  9. Slow down for horses.
     

  10. Avoid riding 2 abreast on narrow roads. On shared paths ride in single file only. 
     

  11. If Severe weather is forecast all rides will be cancelled. No club ride will take place if the temperature drops below 4 degrees. 
     

  12. When stopping at junctions or the top of hills to re-group please don’t stop all across the road. Keep as far left as possible or find a nearby lay-by.
     

  13. Observe all traffic lights.
     

  14. Listen to the ride organiser and follow their instructions at all times.

GENERAL SAFETY NOTICE (taken from our terms and conditions): RRCC does not take responsibility for any activity or person’s in connection with the club website, Facebook page or Strava page. We highly recommend that you have your own insurance (British Cycling is a good starting point for this); both for your bike and third party insurance for whilst you are out on the road. Please use appropriate safety equipment, including: helmet, lights appropriate to conditions, Emergency contact details, mobile phone and cash. Before heading out for any ride with the group you should understand: - Our rides are not ‘led’, they are social gatherings where routes can be suggested, changed, and you are responsible at all times for your own navigation. - Participation is at your own risk. - You are responsible for your own equipment/it’s maintenance. It is strongly advised that you carry suitable spares to make essential repairs. - We expect good road etiquette towards all other road users at all times, and you should be aware your surroundings. - Posted events will indicate how strenuous the ride is expected to be; be realistic about your abilities.
